Course name: AS/A2 French or Spanish

General Information

English is not enough – it is one of the great global languages of the 21st century, but it will only take us so far.

  • Only 6% of the world’s population speaks English as a first language. 75% of the world’s population does not speak any English. You are at an advantage if you can communicate in more than one language.
  • The course builds on the understanding developed at GCSE and will give you the opportunity to apply transferable skills in critical thinking and analysis, and progress to the next level of study at university.
  • You may be able to participate in university visits, meeting other AS/A2 students as part of your language learning.
    We offer small group sessions with a native speaker to improve your spoken language.
  • Students wishing to follow and AS/A2 course in a language will need GCSE grade B or above.
  • At Moseley, we value all languages and are able to enter students for their native language (e.g. Bengali, Arabic, Dutch etc.) without the need for taught lessons. This offer is made on an individual basis.

Examinations cover all 4 language skills (listening, speaking reading and writing).

AS:

Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation (40%)

Paper 2: Written response to works and translation (including literature/film) (30%)

An ability in languages is increasingly valued by employers across all sectors of business and industry. Students may wish to continue studying a language at university or apply their skills in the world of work.

95% of employers based in London think that language skills are important for the economy.
74% of all employers are looking to employ people with basic, conversational language skills.
One in five exporting companies says they are losing trade because of language and cultural barriers.

Extra-curricular enrichment opportunities

Trips to universities provide the chance to further develop language skills, while getting a better understanding of further education. You could take on the role of a peer mentor to younger students in KS4 or KS3.

  • You may be able to participate in university visits, meeting other AS/A2 students as part of your language learning.
  • We offer small group sessions with a native speaker to improve your spoken language.
  • Students wishing to follow and AS/A2 course in a language will need GCSE grade C or above, although a grade B or higher is very preferable. You must be able to read and write the Urdu/Arabic script.
  • At Moseley, we value all languages and are able to enter students for their native language (e.g. Bengali, Arabic, Dutch etc.) without the need for taught lessons. This offer is made on an individual basis.

Course Outline

Examinations cover all 4 language skills (listening, speaking reading and writing), except in Arabic. Arabic is only available as an additional (non-taught) subject at Key Stage 5.

AS Urdu:

Unit 1 – Spoken Expression and Response

(30% of AS, 15% of A2).

Unit 2 – Understanding and Written Response

(70% of AS, 35% of A2).

A2 Urdu

Unit 3 – Understanding and Spoken Response

(35% of AS, 17.5% of A2).

Unit 4 – Research, Understanding and Written Response

(65% of AS, 32.5% of A2).

Arabic:

Unit 1 – Understanding and written response

(100% of AS, 50% of A2).

Unit 2 – Understanding, written response and research

(100% of AS, 50% of A2).
